Dark circles under eyes treatment - why do I have dark circles

Eyes are the most attractive facial feature in everyone. So, we all need to keep our eyes healthy. Dark circles under eyes is a very common issue in both men and women. The color of dark circles May vary from person to person depending on the skin type. They are often seen in purple, brown and black.

Generally, dark circles happen due to thin skin and decreased collagen. However, iron deficiency, allergies and over sleeping are some of the reasons for dark circles under eyes. Eyes look tired and unhealthy when you have dark circles. In many cases dark circles may not be a medical condition.

What causes dark circles under eyes?

There are several causes of under eyes dark circles. Here are some of the causes:

  •  Sleep

  • Aging

  • Dehydration

  • Sun exposure

  • Genetics

  • Iron deficiency

  • Smoking/alcohol

Dark circles happen for different reasons. We need to understand the cause of under eyes dark circles before treating them.

Sleep

Lack of sleep is the main reason for dark circles under the eyes. It is necessary to sleep for 8 hours at night for a person. If you don't  have enough sleep your eyes may look tired, unhealthy, darker and you may also notice puffiness around the eyes.

Aging

Aging is the most common cause of dark circles under eyes. As you age, your skin becomes thin and loses collagen. This can make your skin change darker under the eyes.

Dehydration

Dehydration happens when your body doesn't get enough fluids. When your skin does not receive hydration dark circles appear around the eyes. Taking hydrated Food helps to reduce dark circles.

Sun exposure

Over sun exposure can generate dark circles due to ultraviolet radiation. Around the eyes, skin is sensitive and thin. Sunlight can produce excess melanin(dark brown, pigmentation, occurs in the body, hair and skin) around the eyes. So, sun exposure can cause darkening of skin under eyes.

Iron deficiency

If you don't eat well, your body doesn't get enough nutrients and protein. Iron deficiency is also known as anemia. Anemia can stop reaching of oxygen to body tissues. So, iron deficiency is a common cause of dark circles or pigmented eyes.

Smoking/alcohol

Smoking and alcohol consumption also cause dark circles. Consumption of alcohol impacts your sleep leading to dark circles. Smoking decreases collagen in the skin (collagen is a protein in the body and skin which acts as connecting tissue) which causes dark circles.

Genetics

Dark circles may happen due to hereditary factors. You may have dark circles as an inheritance from your parents or grandparents. These types of dark circles may appear from your childhood.
